iMessage Not Activating? Fix It Before Resetting
19/10/2026
4 Mins
iMessage activation usually fails because of a text-message restriction, a connection problem or an Apple Account issue. Your number may show “waiting for activation”. Verification can take up to 24 hours, particularly after changing phones, networks or eSIMs.
We recommend working through the checks below before erasing anything. Start by separating a mobile-line problem from an iMessage-only fault.
The Short Version
- Your mobile number needs working SMS, even when Wi-Fi and mobile data work.
- Restart iMessage and FaceTime once, then allow uninterrupted time for verification.
- Contact your network provider first if SMS fails; contact Apple if activation still fails after 24 hours.
How to Fix iMessage Activation: Quick Steps
These checks follow Apple’s activation troubleshooting guidance, starting with changes that don’t erase your data.

- Test your connection. Open a webpage over Wi-Fi, then mobile data. Try another network if one fails. Briefly toggle airplane mode if your mobile connection appears stuck.
- Check Apple’s System Status page. iMessage should show a green indicator. Yellow or red indicates a service problem; wait for Apple to resolve it.
- Correct the clock. Check the date and time in Settings > General > Date & Time, then enable Set Automatically. An incorrect time can disrupt connections to Apple’s servers.
- Update iOS. Check your current iOS version, then go to Settings > General > Software Update for an iOS software update.
- Restart both services. Turn off iMessage under Settings > Apps > Messages, then switch off FaceTime in its app menu. Restart your iPhone and turn both back on.
- Force restart if the phone is unresponsive. On recent iPhones, quickly press and release volume up, then volume down. Hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Review your number. Open Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive. A tick beside your number means it’s verified; a spinner means verification remains underway.
When to Wait and When to Call the Network
Working internet doesn’t prove SMS works
Phone-number activation requires SMS. Working mobile data alone doesn’t prove your line can send the text needed for iMessage or FaceTime.
Try sending an ordinary SMS rather than an iMessage or RCS message. If it fails, contact your carrier (your network provider) about outgoing SMS restrictions, account suspension or incomplete number-porting.
Also ask your carrier whether your line allows international SMS, which Apple requires. The network provider may charge for the verification text, so pay-as-you-go users need enough credit.
If calls also fail, follow our iPhone SOS troubleshooting steps first.
Allow a full day after correcting the problem
Once the text test succeeds and you’ve completed the initial checks, allow up to 24 hours. Repeated toggling can restart verification attempts; Apple doesn’t give a precise countdown that resets.
A spinner beside your number means the phone is still trying. Avoid switching iMessage off and on throughout the day.
Deleting an active eSIM and asking the provider to reactivate it is an unofficial fix with mixed reports. Don’t try it without an agreed reinstallation method. Deleting it through Settings > Mobile Data or Cellular > your line > Delete eSIM disconnects that line.
Network and Apple Account Fixes
Remove connection barriers before resetting
Temporarily disable a personal VPN or security app, then try another connection. Such software can block network traffic that iMessage and FaceTime need. Apple’s network security troubleshooting guidance covers these conflicts.
If connectivity remains unreliable, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Reset Network Settings clears saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, and resets mobile-network settings. It doesn’t erase personal data, including photos, apps or messages. Our device connectivity troubleshooting advice covers wider connection faults. Use Reset Network Settings only when connection problems persist.
Check account verification before signing out
If an error says your email address isn’t verified, sign in to your Apple Account online with your Apple ID and complete email verification.
If the problem still remains, back up before you sign out of your Apple Account. Go to Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now.
Then open Settings > your name > Sign Out and follow the prompts to sign out. Restart, then sign back in with the same Apple Account. Signing out affects iCloud services and synchronisation, so we wouldn’t make it the first troubleshooting step.
A factory reset erases your data. Keep it as a last resort, preferably after Apple Support has reviewed the fault.
On the Bench at Used Mobiles 4U
Our technicians check charging, Wi-Fi stability and SIM recognition before resale. Those checks matter because cosmetic condition doesn’t establish whether a phone maintains a reliable connection.
After switching networks, check Settings > General > About > Network Provider Lock. An unlocked iPhone should show “No SIM restrictions”. However, being unlocked doesn’t prove the new line has finished activating.
When setting up a second-hand iPhone, keep your old handset available until messages, calls and important data work correctly. Don’t erase it merely because the transfer appears finished.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t the phone number be selected?
The SIM or eSIM must be active, and Apple must finish verifying the number. An email address can work while number activation remains pending.
Does FaceTime need separate troubleshooting?
FaceTime shares several activation requirements with iMessage. Follow the same SMS, connection, time and account checks when both services fail.
Does an activation error mean the phone needs replacing?
The error alone doesn’t establish a hardware fault. Rule out the line, account and network first.
Fix Activation Before Considering Replacement
We wouldn’t replace an iPhone solely because iMessage isn’t activating. Check SMS availability and settings, restart the service once, then let verification finish.
If the issue remains after these checks, contact your network provider about SMS first. Once the line works, ask Apple Support to investigate. An Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider can assess a possible hardware fault without assuming replacement is necessary.
