Why Is My iPhone GPS Location Inaccurate?

If your iPhone’s GPS is inaccurate, check for a weak satellite signal, restricted location permissions or an app using an old position. It doesn’t automatically mean the phone needs repairing.
We recommend checking permissions and signal first, then comparing two map apps before resetting anything. Work through the checks below, stopping once your position updates correctly.
The Short Version
- Enable Location Services and Precise Location for your map app.
- Test outside and wait for your position to settle.
- Compare Apple Maps with Google Maps.
- Try updates and targeted resets before considering hardware repairs.
How to Fix Inaccurate iPhone GPS: Quick Steps

Make changes whilst stationary, never whilst driving. Test the blue dot after each step.
- Move outdoors. Buildings, roofs and tall streets can obstruct the GPS signal. Leave Wi-Fi enabled because nearby networks help location estimates. Allow a little time for the position to settle.
- Enable precise access. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Switch it on, select Maps or Google Maps, choose While Using the App, then enable Precise Location. Apple’s location permissions guidance explains these controls.
- Correct the clock. Go to Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. An incorrect date and time or time zone can affect GPS accuracy.
- Reopen the affected app. Close and reopen it, then restart your iPhone normally. This can clear a temporary software problem without changing saved settings.
- Install updates. Install the latest iOS update in Settings > General > Software Update. Then update the affected navigation app, such as Google Maps, through the App Store. Updates can fix location-related bugs.
- Force restart if necessary. On iPhones with Face ID, press and release volume up, then volume down. Hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. This may take longer than ten seconds; don’t release it simply because the screen goes black.
- Remove possible interference. Temporarily remove magnetic mounts or metal-heavy cases. If the dot is correct but its direction is wrong, check Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Compass Calibration.
Apple’s GPS accuracy advice also covers signal obstructions. If mobile reception fails too, follow our iPhone SOS troubleshooting steps.
When Only One Navigation App Is Wrong
Refresh the app before resetting the phone
If Apple Maps works but Waze lags, start with Waze. Where supported, enter ##@rawgps in Waze’s search to compare raw GPS with its estimated position. A Waze delay after a turn can point to app processing rather than incorrect phone coordinates.
If your GPS position is accurate but a road or address is mapped incorrectly, report the map error through the app’s map editor or reporting tool, where available.
For Apple Maps, try Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Maps > Offload App, then Reinstall App. Offloading retains documents and data.
Background App Refresh isn’t required for foreground GPS. For background refresh, use Settings > General > Background App Refresh > Wi-Fi & Mobile Data, enabling Maps if listed.
Old coordinates can briefly reappear
The CoreLocation framework can briefly reuse cached coordinate points when an app reopens. After a 40-mile journey, it may initially show your previous position. Check whether your coordinate points update as you move.
Developers should reject missing location data, negative horizontalAccuracy values and out-of-order timestamps. A 150-metre accuracy cut-off is one possible filter, not an Apple-wide rule.
A Kalman filter and interpolation can smooth noisy readings, including during weak reception or gaps around standby. However, smoothing can introduce lag and cannot recover a missing signal. Users need an app update or developer fix.
Reset Location Settings Before Erasing Anything
Back up first through Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now.
Reset Location & Privacy
Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy.
The reset location and privacy option clears location and privacy permissions without deleting photos, messages or personal files. It doesn’t erase every stored location record. Afterwards, reopen Maps and grant location access again, including Precise Location.
Reset Network Settings only if needed
If problems continue, use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
This removes saved wireless networks and passwords, so record any passwords you can’t easily recover first. It doesn’t delete your photos or apps. However, reconnecting afterwards takes time, so we wouldn’t start here.
Our device troubleshooting guidance covers related connectivity and mobile-data faults. Don’t select Erase All Content and Settings during these checks.
What We Check Before Resale
Our refurbishment checks cover battery behaviour, charging, Face ID, cameras and mobile signal. Cosmetic condition alone cannot establish whether a handset works properly.
For a GPS complaint, we’d compare navigation apps outdoors before blaming the GPS chip. Persistent errors across apps, especially after a drop or liquid exposure, justify professional assessment. Antenna connections and board faults need diagnosis rather than guesswork.
Apple or an authorised service provider may offer replacement rather than chip-level work. If you’re considering an Apple service center, ask what assessment is available. A suitably equipped independent specialist may be appropriate for board-level repairs. Contact your seller first if warranty support could apply.
We favour repair when the fault is isolated and the rest of the phone is sound. Weak battery life, unreliable charging and frame damage can change that decision. Our second-hand iPhone checks help assess its wider condition.
Common GPS Questions
Why does the pin move whilst the phone is at home?
Indoor satellite reception is weaker, so your iPhone may rely more heavily on Wi-Fi and mobile-network estimates. A large accuracy circle means the position is uncertain.
Does an approximate location mean the GPS is broken?
No. Precise Location may be disabled for that app, or reception may be poor. Enable precise access and test outdoors before assuming hardware failure.
Fix the Cause Before Replacing the Phone
We’d keep an otherwise reliable iPhone once permissions, an update or an app refresh restores accurate navigation. Persistent outdoor errors across several apps deserve a proper diagnosis.
Back up before arranging repairs. Compare the complete repair cost with replacement only after the fault is clear.
