Why Is My iPhone Battery Draining Overnight?

04/09/2026

6 Mins

Meta description: Find out why your iPhone battery drains overnight. Check app activity, signal and iOS tasks, then decide if repair is sensible.

Waking up to a flat phone is frustrating, especially when you barely touched it. iPhone battery draining overnight is usually caused by background processes, weak coverage, unfinished system work or reduced battery health.

We recommend checking the evidence before changing several settings. Overnight power consumption can increase temporarily after setting up a phone or updating iOS.

The Short Version

  • Start in Settings > Battery and look for unusual app activity or Apple insights.
  • Test one night in Airplane Mode to see whether Cellular signal strength is contributing. It’s temporary and affects normal calls and texts.
  • Use Low Power Mode when you need a practical short-term fix.
  • Check for a Service message in Settings > Battery, then consider repair if the rest of the phone remains reliable.

iPhone battery draining overnight: find the cause first

Open Settings > Battery and review the battery level and activity charts. They separate app activity from system services, and foreground use from background processes. Tap a time period to see which apps used power, then choose Show Activity to compare screen time with background time.

Apple’s battery usage guidance can also show useful insights, including system services and an ongoing iOS update. A recently restored iPhone may spend a day or two downloading apps, indexing photos and restoring data from iCloud backups. Leave it on a stable Wi-Fi network and give it time before assuming the battery has failed.

Background App Refresh can stay busy after bedtime

Cloud storage, photo syncing, VPNs, fitness trackers and email accounts can remain active after the screen locks. Push notifications can wake the Lock Screen or trigger background work. If one appears high on the list with little screen time, it deserves a closer look, including its email fetch settings where relevant.

Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn it off for apps that don’t need to refresh overnight. Start with social media, shopping and rarely used services. You can also review Location Services in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, limiting apps that don’t need your location all the time.

Focus Mode and Do Not Disturb reduce interruptions, but neither necessarily stops an app syncing or using mobile data in the background.

Weak mobile signal uses more power than expected

Poor cellular signal strength can make an iPhone keep trying to find or hold a network, increasing power consumption. This often explains a large overnight loss in rural areas, basements or rooms with thick walls.

Try one night with Airplane Mode on. If you still need internet access, switch Wi-Fi back on and reconnect to your usual Wi-Fi. A much better result points to signal strength rather than a rogue app. It remains a test, not a permanent solution, because it prevents normal calls and texts.

How to stop overnight battery drain: Quick Steps

Work through these steps in order, checking the result after each change to avoid unnecessary power consumption.

  1. Go to Settings > Battery and check the last 24 hours before changing anything.
  2. Tap the chart and use Show Activity to find apps with high background use.
  3. Restart the iPhone, then check Settings > General > Software Update for any available update.
  4. Open Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn off non-essential apps first.
  5. Review unnecessary location permissions under Settings > Privacy & Security, then set each app to While Using the App.
  6. Turn on Low Power Mode overnight. On iPhone 15 and later, go to Settings > Battery > Power Mode; on earlier devices, go to Settings > Battery and enable it there. You can also use Control Center if you’ve added the control.
  7. If the Lock Screen or display wakes frequently, reduce screen brightness in Settings > Display & Brightness and review Auto-Lock. This matters while the display is active, not when it’s off.
  8. Run the Airplane Mode test for one night if your home mobile signal is weak. Reconnect to your usual Wi-Fi network if you need internet access during the test.
  9. Review Email fetch settings for non-essential accounts, especially if they check for new messages frequently.

Before considering any reset, complete iCloud backups first. Don’t jump to a factory reset: it removes data and may not fix a weak signal or a worn battery.

Low Power Mode reduces background activity, including Mail fetch and app refreshing. Apple confirms that it turns off automatically after the phone charges above 80%, so you may need to enable it again the following evening. See Apple’s explanation of this setting for the features it reduces.

What We See on the Bench at Used Mobiles 4U

Our technicians regularly see overnight battery complaints with more than one contributing factor. A phone may look pristine, yet an ageing battery can lose its reserve quickly when background syncing, poor signal and a busy Lock Screen add pressure.

We check charging behaviour alongside battery health and battery capacity. If your iPhone appears to drain overnight while plugged in, the issue may be charging rather than discharge. Pocket lint can stop a cable seating fully, while worn contacts can cause intermittent charging. Wireless charging working does not prove that the wired port is healthy.

When buying second-hand, cosmetic grade matters less than battery condition, reliable charging and a straight frame. A clean exterior alone doesn’t prove strong performance. Our guide on what to check when buying a used iPhone covers the checks worth making during the return period.

When battery health means repair is sensible

On iPhone 15 and later, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iPhone 14 and earlier, use Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Check maximum capacity, Peak Performance Capability and any Service message.

This reading shows how much battery capacity remains compared with when the iPhone was new. A percentage below 80% is a strong sign that the battery has worn heavily. However, a Service message, unexpected shutdowns, unusual warmth and repeated overnight loss provide a clearer case for replacement than one number alone. Our refurbished iPhone battery health guide explains how to read those signs in daily use.

Repair or replace an old iPhone?

A battery replacement can be good value when Face ID, cameras, charging and the display all work properly. Complete iCloud backups or a computer backup before transferring data or selling.

Replacement becomes more sensible when faults stack up. A weak battery combined with a damaged screen, loose port, bent frame or liquid exposure can make several repairs poor value. Only after confirming the backup has completed should you sign out of your Apple Account and wipe the iPhone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my iPhone battery draining overnight when I’m not using it?

Background app activity, weak mobile signal, iCloud syncing and unfinished iOS tasks can all use power while the screen is locked. Check Settings > Battery and use Show Activity to identify unusual background use before changing several settings.

Does Airplane Mode stop overnight battery drain?

Airplane Mode can reduce battery use caused by a weak cellular signal, but it also prevents normal calls and texts. Use it as a one-night test, and switch Wi-Fi back on if you still need internet access.

Should I turn off Background App Refresh overnight?

Turn it off for apps that do not need to update while you sleep, such as social media, shopping and rarely used services. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and start with the apps showing high background activity.

When should I replace my iPhone battery?

Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health, or Battery Health & Charging on iPhone 14 and earlier. A capacity below 80%, a Service message, unexpected shutdowns, unusual warmth or continued overnight drain can make battery replacement sensible, especially if the rest of the phone remains reliable.

A practical verdict

iPhone battery draining overnight does not automatically mean a new battery is needed. Check Battery activity first, test signal strength and give recent iOS tasks time to finish.

If the pattern continues and battery health shows a warning, battery replacement may restore useful daily life. When the phone has several faults, a tested refurbished replacement is usually the safer choice.
