Why Does My iPhone Screen Keep Dimming?

4 Mins
Your iPhone screen usually dims because Auto-Brightness, Auto-Lock or Low Power Mode is adjusting it. Heat can also reduce brightness, even when the slider is at maximum.
We recommend checking settings before assuming the display needs replacing. Note when iPhone screen dimming occurs: does the screen going dark happen during use, before locking, or when hot?
The Short Version
- Dimming after inactivity usually points to Auto-Lock or attention detection.
- Brightness changes during use suggest Auto-Brightness, power-saving settings or heat.
- Persistent dark patches, flickering or uneven brightness need a display assessment, particularly after a screen replacement.
How to Stop iPhone Screen Dimming: Quick Steps
Change one setting at a time, then test the phone under the same lighting.
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. Scroll to the bottom and switch off Auto-Brightness temporarily. It’s hidden here, rather than under Display & Brightness.
- Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. The screen dims shortly before locking. If 30 seconds interrupts reading, choose a longer interval.
- Check Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Attention Aware Features. This keeps the display awake whilst you’re looking. When it doesn’t detect your attention, normal dimming and locking resume. We recommend leaving it enabled for reading.
- Turn off Low Power Mode under Settings > Battery. On newer software, open Power Mode first. Low Power Mode reduces brightness and can shorten the Auto-Lock interval.
- After disabling Auto-Brightness, temporarily turn off True Tone under Settings > Display & Brightness, beneath the brightness slider. Also open Night Shift here and disable its schedule whilst testing. Auto-Brightness reacts to ambient light; True Tone adjusts colour tone, and Night Shift applies a warmer tint.
- Return to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and check Reduce White Point. This reduces bright colours’ intensity and can make everything look dimmer. Previous owners may have enabled it.
- Wipe the front glass with a soft, dry cloth. Check whether a case or screen protector covers the front sensor area, then retest.
These display paths are the same in iOS 17 and iOS 18. Dark mode changes interface colours, so it won’t fix a dim display. True Tone and Night Shift mainly affect colour appearance, so disabling them won’t override heat protection.
Why Full Brightness Can Still Look Dim

Apple’s display brightness guidance explains that heat can reduce maximum screen brightness until the device cools. This protection works even with Auto-Brightness switched off.
Apple specifies an operating temperature of 0 to 35°C and storage temperatures of -20 to 45°C. Direct sunlight, navigation and charging together can push a phone beyond comfortable operating conditions.
If you see “iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it”, stop using it. Disconnect charging, switch it off and move it somewhere shaded to cool naturally. Don’t use a fridge or freezer.
A maximum brightness slider doesn’t mean maximum output when thermal protection is active.
Repeated overheating during light indoor use deserves investigation. A faulty battery can contribute, although warmth alone doesn’t prove battery failure.
Restart, Update and Reset Safely
Restart and update first
Restart normally first. If the phone is unresponsive, use a force restart. Quickly press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down. Hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
Next, open Settings > General > Software Update to check for an iOS update. Use Wi-Fi and connect a charger before installing it.
There’s no universal requirement for exactly 6 GB of free storage or 85% battery charge. Follow the storage and power prompts your iPhone displays.
Reset preferences without erasing photos
If dimming continues, back up through Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now.
Then open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. This restores preferences without deleting your photos, apps or other personal content.
However, you’ll need to reconfigure settings such as Wi-Fi networks and privacy permissions. Don’t choose Erase All Content and Settings, which wipes the phone.
What We Check Before Resale
We assess display brightness and uniformity alongside touch response, Face ID, charging and battery condition. Cosmetic grading describes appearance; a Grade A label alone doesn’t establish display quality.
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health, or Battery Health & Charging, depending on the handset. Look for Maximum Capacity and service warnings. Our guide to understanding refurbished iPhone battery health explains why the percentage needs context.
For persistent dimming, inspect Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History, where supported. Our parts and repair history guide explains the messages.
A missing True Tone switch is a repair-history warning, not proof the phone is unusable. However, flickering, dark patches or uneven colour warrant professional assessment. A lifted screen or suspected swollen battery means stopping use and charging immediately.
If these checks point to a hardware issue, you can seek an assessment from a reputable repairer, an Apple Store or the Genius Bar.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the locked screen stay faintly lit?
On supported iPhones, Always On Display keeps a dimmed lock screen visible. Turn it off under Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display if you want the screen black when locked.
Why does the screen wake when the phone moves?
Raise to Wake can illuminate the lock screen when you lift the handset. Disable it at Settings > Display & Brightness > Raise to Wake. This is separate from unexpected dimming during use.
Fix the Cause Before Replacing the Phone
Most iPhone screen dimming needs a settings adjustment or time to cool down. Persistent display faults deserve diagnosis before you spend money on a replacement.
We favour repair when the rest of the handset remains dependable. If several faults make replacement sensible, our refurbished iPhone buying guide helps you compare battery condition, grading and warranty support.
